Having a low supply of breastmilk is frustrating. And finding a breastfeeding-safe protein smoothie for post-workout recovery is frustrating. So, finding Mom’s Original Lactation Smoothie Mix seemed like a perfect solution to my frustrations. I tried out the Strawberry Banana Flavor and the Cinnamon Vanilla one, and here’s what I discovered.
Although there were some recipes on the back of the smoothie mix, I first decided to try making the smoothie with only milk and ice. My son eats more fruit than anyone I know, so I don’t always have fruit available for me. Without fruit, it tasted okay…better than some other protein smoothies that I’ve tried and definitely better than other lactation aids that I’ve tried.
The real taste test was when I followed the recipe on the back of the package. It was good; something I would drink when I’m trying to avoid snacking. It didn’t have that chalky protein taste and tasted like a real smoothie. The Strawberry Banana was my favorite; add some real banana and yogurt, and it’s very tasty.
Although taste matters (you don’t want to have to gag down a smoothie every day), the real question is whether or not it works. I don’t have a very low supply, but I have always had a hard time pumping breast milk. So I decided to test the results by pumping before and after I tried the smoothie. I found that, after two days of drinking one smoothie a day, I was able to pump a little more.
That’s not to say this is a one-stop solution to moms with supply issues. Every mom responds to different products and ingredients differently; it certainly didn’t leave me engorged and with enough milk to feed an army of babies.
Just like everything else in motherhood, figuring out how to increase your milk supply is trial and error. Mom’s Original Lactation Smoothie Mix is definitely merits a trial. Even if it doesn’t help with your production, you can use it as a post-workout smoothie or just as a way to satisfy snack cravings.
