Fashion Friday:  New Mom Fashion Do’s and Don’ts

A year ago

It seems that when you have a baby, you have a guide to follow. There’s lots of literature out there that helps you with feeding, bathing, and bedding your baby. I can’t tell you how many times I look around though, and see so many beautiful mommies out and about with their new bundles of joy, and they are making some serious fashion mistakes. I got it; I hear you-fashion is the furthest thing from your mind. But, it is important to remember, that you need to do things for yourself from time to time, and looking great is one of them. When you look good, you feel good. So, consider some of these new mom fashion do’s and don’ts for the next time you venture out of the house with your baby.

Fashion Do’s

Do play up shoes. Shoes are awesome because they always fit. And, chances are; your feet have rebounded from the swelling you’ve experienced, so your favorites will fit again. Shoes can make or break an outfit, so explore online while your baby is napping and check out some new summer sandal trends.

Do wear bright colors! Don’t try to conceal your post-baby bump by covering up in drab, dark tones; especially if you’ve had a summer delivery. Embrace the season and select bold and bright colors. They will really “wake up” your day and work wonders for your skin tone.

Do try patterns. One of the best ways to look slimmer is by wearing a pattern-if it’s the right pattern. Size in a pattern is everything! For summer, wear a punchy floral that is mid-sized. Anything too small (like polka dots) will make you appear larger. Anything too big (like humongous hibiscus flowers) will just accentuate your size. Mid-sized prints (a fist or just slightly larger) is perfect for new mommies!

Fashion Don’ts

Don’t wear maternity clothes. Obviously, this rule doesn’t apply if you are still recovering from your delivery days after, or even a C-section; since you don’t have much mobility yet. But, if you are 10-12 weeks out, it’s time to ditch those maternity clothes and simply size up a bit if you haven’t lost all of your baby weight yet. Yes, maternity leggings are super comfortable, but you can be just as comfortable in a great pair of stretchy jeans and a flattering short sleeved tunic.

Don’t try to stuff yourself into your skinny jeans. Yes, maternity clothes should be put away, but you should also not put too much pressure to get back into your pre baby clothes if you aren’t ready. A great in-between solution is a belly band. It will allow you to wear your favorite clothes, even if you can’t button or zip them up just yet. Plus, belly bands are paper thin and are barely noticeable when worn!

Consider these new mom fashion do’s and don’ts if you are really to start getting out and about to enjoy the sights and sounds of summer!
